Late-breaking work accepted at RO-MAN 2026

I am happy to share that our late-breaking work with Adriana Hanulíková, Disfluencies in robot- and human-directed narration: Preliminary findings on partner effects and temperamental shyness, has been accepted for presentation at IEEE RO-MAN 2026 in Kitakyushu, Japan.

In this work-in-progress, we examine how adults narrate stories to a social robot compared with a human partner. We focus on prosodic pattern with regard to filled and unfilled pauses as indicators of how speakers may adapt their speech to different interaction partners, and we also explore how temperamental shyness and multilingual language backgrounds may relate to these patterns.

The preliminary findings suggest that robot-directed and human-directed narration may differ in pause type: robot-directed narration contained fewer filled pauses but more unfilled pauses. These results point to the importance of studying speech directed at robots as a window into users’ interactional processing, especially when designing social robots for diverse users.
